Carboeurope
The JRC-IES test site of San Rossore has the aim to understand and quantify the carbon balance of a mediterrean forest ecosystem and its vulnerability to climate change.
The test site is located in a Pinus pinaster plantation within the Regional park San Rossore, close to Pisa (Tuscany), is operational since November 1998 and has been part of several European projects (now is within the CarboEurope-IP and Nitroeurope networks). It is instrumented to perform long term monitoring of several micrometeorological and gas exchange parameters at both the canopy level (through a flux tower) and the soil level. Given its long-term functioning - uncommon for similar experimental locations - the test site of San Rossore represents an exceptional source of information for the scientists studying the role of forest in mitigating climate change as well as the impact of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems.

The
mission of the JRC is to provide customer-driven scientific and
technical support for the conception, development, implementation and
monitoring of EU policies. As a service of the European Commission, the
JRC functions as a reference centre of science and technology for the
Union. Close to the policy-making process, it serves the common
interest of the Member States, while being independent of special
interests, whether private or national.
